The Regional Series is a year-long project by cultural promoter and artist Abdiel Segarra, founder of the publication Conboca, that will consist of exhibitions and events that within a particular framework attempt to establish a dialogue between artist, curator and spectator as an educational, investigative and cultural platform. The exhibitions will take place at the Antiguo Arsenal de la Marina Española, La Puntilla in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The goal of the Regional Series is to recognize and examine contemporary Puerto Rican artistic practice. For this first installment of the Series, curated by Bianca Ortiz, Abdiel Segarra and Ralph Vázquez, the Series focused on Puerto Rican artists that have had an experience abroad, however brief or prolonged their sejourn may have been. The influence of this contact outside of the island is more or less visible on the work, depending on the length of the stay and the purpose of the trip.
Among the works on exhibit, Vanessa Hernández Gracia’s Catalogaré I, II & III stands out for its conceptual presence and depth. The work is comprised of a projected image of a torn down light-post, a row of hung journals and sketchbooks, plaster blocks with encrusted objects and a cast of the artist’s body; a remnant of her performance during opening night. The petrification of the body beautifully echoes in the stillness of language and objects.
Vanessa Hernández Gracia travelled to Spain to pursue her doctoral studies at the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha in Cuenca in 2000. She lived in Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid, and travelled extensively throughout Europe. In 2005, Hernández Gracia participated in a workshop by renowned performance artist Marina Abramovic in Murcia, Spain, where she was able to further define her artistic goals and her genuine interest for performance art.
On view there are also woks by Alia Farid & Esteban Quiñones, Osvaldo Budet, Michelle Gratacós Arill and Karla Cott, among others.
